Cleansing oils found their way into the beauty routines of Hollywood film stars in the 1950s. This oil-based cleanser was used to remove the heavy stage makeup used by Hollywood stars. Makeup artists found that cleansing oils effectively removed heavy makeup with ease and did not strip the skin of its natural oils. I decided to try the Missha Cleansing Oil. Here's how it went.
Here's a little background on the origins of the cleansing oil. The first cleansing oil was introduced by a well-known Japanese brand in the 1960's. The beauty world has embraced it so much so that one beauty brand after another has developed their own versions of the essential cleansing oil. Since then it has evolved into different formulas with versions to suit the need of every skin type imaginable. Eventually, it made its way to the homes of today's women as part of their everyday skincare regimen.
When cleansing oils became all the craze, many embraced it while many, especially women with oily skins (myself included) were still doubtful about its benefits. This doubt comes from the fact that for generations, we were made to believe using oil on oily skin can clog pores, make skin more oily and cause breakouts. We know that that's not the case anymore. But just like any other skincare product, when choosing cleansing oils, it is important to check the ingredient list for substances that you may be allergic to.
One of the main ingredients in cleansing oils is mineral oil or olive oil mixed in with other types. Most people are worry of using mineral oil because it tends to cause irritation. This is especially true for people with sensitive & acne-prone skin. I'm particularly conscious of this, being that I have oily & acne prone skin since my teenage years. I've also tried cleansing oils from other brands that contained mineral oil and my skin broke out with the mineral oil. I wanted to try the Missha Cleansing Oil to see how a Korean made cleansing oil would hold up to its Japanese counterparts. I wanted to find out how it was different.
- What's in it: The Missha Cleansing Oil boasts of a mix of several botanical oils which are chockfull of antioxidants and skin loving vitamins. Here's a short list of what's in it. For starters, it has olive oil that is full of polyphenols which are high in anti-oxidants & Vitamin E reducing cell damage, sunflower oil which softens the skin & macadamia nut oil which smoothes away lines & wrinkles. It also has jojoba oil which locks in moisture but lets your skin breathe, meadowfoam seed oil which hydrates & softens the skin and grape seed oil which cleanses & moisturizes the skin. In addition to all that, it also has tea tree oil which is commonly used to treat blemishes & soothed troubled skin with its antibacterial properties. Now let's move to what it claims to do for your skin.
- It claims to: The Missha Cleansing Oil claims to deeply & effectively remove dirt, sebum & waterproof makeup. It also promises to moisturize & nourish your skin while cleansing your skin. It won't strip your skin of its natural oils.
- Packaging, Texture & Product experience: The Missha Cleansing Oil comes in a dreamy pink 6.76 oz / 200 ml pump bottle. With clean & dry hands, I dispensed a few pumps into my palm and applied some to my dry face. As I massaged the oil all over my face in circular motions to loosen the dirt, sebum, and makeup, the oil felt light and smooth on my face.
- Effectiveness & Price: Honestly, I was very skeptical about actually trying the Missha Cleansing Oil. This is because of its mineral oil content. What convinced me to try it on my skin was when I say that it has tea tree oil, which is beneficial to troubled skin. After massaging, I wet my face with lukewarm water to emulsify the oil. Upon contact with water, the oil on my face turned into a milky white liquid. I continued to add water to my face to remove traces of the cleansing oil. As a final cleanse, I splashed my face with more water to rinse it thoroughly. After rinsing off the oil, my face felt smooth, the makeup was gone and my face didn't feel greasy. As expected, my face still needed a foaming face wash but I was completely satisfied with how the cleansing oil removed my makeup. I like using full coverage foundation and transfer-proof lipsticks for work. It did a great job in removing my waterproof mascara. I was blown away by how it removed all traces of makeup but didn't leave my skin tight and dry. For a busy girl like me, I like products that are effective and save me time. For its price of $27.00, it is a very effective oil cleanser & is great value for money. I can say it's a more reasonably priced alternative to those high end cleansing oils and it's just as effective. This is definitely earned its place as a staple in my skin care regimen.
The Missha Cleansing Oil certainly didn't disappoint! It was tough on dirt, sebum & makeup but very gentle on my skin. I'm sure you'll love it too.
